The Volvo XC60 is a small luxury SUV that’s big on technology and style. First introduced in 2009, the XC60 enters 2018 as a completely redesigned model. The latest iteration of Volvo’s Go anywhere, do anything transport is better than ever. It offers more room, a greater number of engine options and a fresh design.
The Volvo XC60 lineup
Volvo sold more than a million units of the outgoing XC60 model. The best-selling, premium midsize SUV in Europe continues to evolve with the introduction of the current version. For 2018, the 5-passenger XC60 is offered in three, trendsetting trim levels. The lineup includes Momentum, R-Design and Inscription.
Although it’s considered the base model, the XC60 Momentum is anything but. It features amenities typically only found on top-tier models. Outside, the Momentum model boasts LED lighting, automatic high beams and automatic wipers.
Access to the interior’s voluminous cargo space is made easy with a programmable, power liftgate. Once inside, you’ll find leather upholstery complimented by aluminum trim. Occupants can sit back, relax and enjoy the panoramic sunroof and automatic dual-zone climate control. Entertainment comes curtesy of a touch-screen infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In true Volvo fashion, the Momentum comes with a long list of advanced safety features. Highlights include the City Safety System and a lineup of lane-keeping aids. Volvo’s advanced, semi-autonomous driving aid, called Pilot Assist, is offered as an option on all trim levels.
All XC60 trim levels, including the Momentum, come with one of three drivetrains. Referred to as T5, T6, or T8, each is based on a 2.0L four-cylinder engine. The T5 variant is turbocharged, whereas the T6 is both turbocharged and supercharged. As for the T8, it pairs the 2.0L with an electric motor, creating a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The electrified T8 is the most powerful option of all. All XC60 models come standard with an advanced automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Volvo might not come out and say it, but the ‘R’ in R-Design stands for race. Stemming from a lineage of performance-inspired Type-R vehicles, the R-Design is the sport model in the XC60 lineup. It comes with all the niceties offered on the Momentum model, while also adding sportier interior and exterior styling. Other notable upgrades include keyless entry, a hand-free liftgate and selectable driving modes.
Luxury abounds in the Inscription trim level. This high-ranking model gets all the features offered on the other trim levels, along with most of the styling cues from the R-Design. Inscription also adds to the mix, amenities such as Nappa Leather seats (with ventilation and massaging) and ambient interior lighting. An adaptive air suspension improves handling while a Bowers and Wilkins sound system provides the tunes. The inscription model even has a cooled glovebox. You know, just in case you should ever need such a thing.
